Oklahoma’s Military Installations

Oklahoma’s military installations are vital to the nation–not only to train our warfighters, but also to manufacture and repair the material used to equip our men and women in uniform. Beyond providing for our national security, the military installations in Oklahoma have a tremendous economic impact in the state.

Altus Air Force Base
​Altus, Oklahoma

Altus AFB has deep roots in the history of military aviation and continues to be at the forefront of aviation training. Training and preparing over 3,000 pilots and maintenance technicians every year, Altus AFB is one of the most important military facilities established in Oklahoma. Its main objective is to train some of the finest and experimented pilots in the Air Force.

Currently, the base hosts over 2000 military troops, not to mention about close to 1000 family members and more than 2500 employed civilians. Approximately 5,000 military members, family members, civilian members and retirees are in the Altus area. Altus AFB serves active-duty Military, DoD Civilians, NAF Civilians, Military Families and Retirees.​

TinkerAir Force Base
​Midwest City, Oklahoma

Located right in the middle of Oklahoma, it is among the military facilities of high importance due to the US Navy tenants and the multiple missions of the Department of Defense. Tinker AFB is the host site for the Air Force Sustainment Center. The Center provides war-winning expeditionary capabilities to the warfighter through world-class depot maintenance, supply chain management and installation support.

Its name comes from the well-known General Clarence L. Tinker, the first native American who managed to become a major general. The Air Force Sustainment Center is commanded by a three-star general and consists of more than 32,000 military and civilian personnel. AFSC provides installation support to more than 141 Associate Units with more than 75,000 personnel.

There are 30,689 total personnel within Tinker Air Force Base, including 6,480 military, 4,660 military dependents and 17,203 civilians. Tinker AFB had an annual federal payroll of $1.76 billion and annual expenditures of $1.47 billion. Annually, Tinker AFB generates approximately $1.60 billion in jobs created with a total of $4.83 billion in total annual economic impact. Tinker owns 5,424 acres, leases 810 acres and has 642 acres of easements.

Vance Air Force Base
Enid, Oklahoma

Vance Air Force base history dates back to 1941 when it was
originally founded as Air Corps Basic Flying School, Enid, OK. The base is named in the memory of Leon Robert Vance Jr., who was awarded with the Medal of Honor for his missions in World War II.  Its primary objective is to train some of the finest and most experienced pilots for multiple corps, including the Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps. At the same time, the base supports training sessions for the allied countries of the USA.

Vance has about 1,200 active duty and Reserve military, as well as more than 1,100 family members living in the local area. The base also employs almost 1,300 Federal civilian employees, non-appropriated fund civilian employees, contractors and private business employees. There are an estimated 2,200 retired military members in the local area.

McAlester Army Ammunition Plant
McAlester, Oklahoma

“Transforming Industrial Power Into Military Readiness.”
MCAAP is the Department of Defense’s premier bomb and missile warhead loading facility. As a government-owned/government-operated (GOGO) facility they are capable of loading large and small quantities of bombs.

They produce bombs ranging from 250 pounds to the Massive Ordnance Air Burst (MOAB) bomb weighing in at 21,700 pounds–the world’s third largest bomb. Their products and services are available to other government agencies, defense contractors, and foreign allies.

McAlester supplies one-third of munitions for the Defense Department and is considered the premier bomb- and warhead-loading facility, delivering thousands of Mark 84 2,000-pound bombs, M11 artillery rounds and 105mm artillery rounds, and others.

MAAP currently has 1865 civilian personnel, 1 military personnel, area veterans, Army Reserve and National Guard.

The Oklahoma National Guard has a rich heritage of answering the call of duty to defend the nation on home soil and abroad. Since 9/11, more than 30,000 of our Soldiers and Airmen have deployed, many of them serving multiple deployments to answer our nation’s call. Although major combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan have stopped, the OKNG is still deploying in large numbers to support national objectives. OKNG Soldiers and Airmen performed missions and training this past year with active-duty and coalition counterparts in the Middle East, Europe, Africa, and the Pacific. They provided helicopter airlift and air support, military police, air combat support, unmanned aerial systems, manned I.S.R., medical, logistics, security force, and engineering capabilities.

Since September 11, 2001, the Oklahoma National Guard deployed more than 30,000 Soldiers and Airmen supporting the Global War on Terrorism. They deployed to more than 16 countries, with the majority of our deployments being in Afghanistan and Iraq. They have defended freedom in multiple operations to include: The Oklahoma National Guard’s federal mission is to fight and win the nation’s wars.

U.S. Coast Guard Container Inspection Training

“Always Ready.”
The United States Coast Guard is among the five military forces in the country. It is the only one of them that responds in front of the Department of Homeland Security. The primary mission of Coast Guard Institute is to support the training operations and sessions required by the US Coast Guard. It deals with multiple operations in the country, from environmental missions, to search and rescue operations, or patrolling. It is the primary site for training operations. Aside from the Coast Guard Academy, it is the most important institution in this military branch.

The Container Inspection Training and Assistance Team is one of the most important units working for the United States Coast Guard. The unit consists of highly trained professionals. They are responsible for inspecting the containers containing dangerous and hazardous substances, but also for transporting them at sea or some other isolated places for destruction. It is one of the riskiest missions the United States Coast Guard deals with. These experts are hosted at the Mike Monroney Aeronautical Center.
